Royal Family at Buckingham Palace

The Royal family at the Buckingham palace

In the picture there are to men standing and 2 women sitting in a Couch in front
In the picture we se King george V 5'th (dunke of Windsor) 1865-1936, Prince of Wales, Queen Mary 1897-1964 and Prinsesse Mary the little Girl

The Queen and the princes are sitting in the Couch. The King George.  is stranding on of the side of the Couch and the Prince is behind the Couch.  It takes place in the White painting room and it is painted in 1913.

They are all formally dressed. The King in all his medals and with s sword. The Prince is in a more modest outfit.
The Queen is wearing a Crown and fine clothes aswell. And the princess is modest

Things noticed first:
The persons. Their looks and how they stare out on the viewer.
It is painted in a sitting position witch makes the viewer look a little up to them.

The shades are soft and there are not many of them.
The Colours is a little pale and very neutral. Except the blue bands and the shiny medals
It is painted with a lot of vertical Lines.

It is quite normal on the surface, but underneath there is a lot more than the eye catches at first sight.

Mood; Pale straight faces. A little moody. They definitely do not look happy.
The Prince has a serious face and he looks a little sad.

Symbols imagery:
Crown
Medals
Sword
The blue band the King and queen are wearing. Royal order. The garter of the rose.

The life of the Royal family at that time.

The Colours makes it look very neutral and a bit pale

And then the group – George V, a full-dress Admiral of the Fleet with epaulettes, a stalwart old constitutional monarch, who hated London, but never failed in his duty; Queen Mary, who submerged her private interests out of respect for the throne, and blossomed only in widowhood; the Prince of Wales, about to do his duty in the Great War, insofar as he was allowed, but destined to surrender his heritage for an unworthy wife; and Princess Mary, soon to be the heroine of the forces, who married the much older Earl of Harwood, and who, till her dying day, trembled with nerves before every royal engagement.

The painting shows the viewer what we expect from the royal family. But on the other hand the prince makes the royal family look different and week because he faces the other way and he looks sad. It is like he doesn’t want to be there. He doesn’t have the same “fake” surface on his face.
The painting puts another perspective on the Royal family because of  they are not standing perfect facing the viewers.
