Winterhalter's Prince Albert

Picture analysis of “Prince Albert”

Description:
In the picture, we see Prince Albert. He is posing in what seems to be a bedroom. The picture was painted. Franz Xaver Winterhalter painted it in 1867. This all took place during the Victorian time. Prince Albert looks very powerful and rich. He also looks very proud.

Analysis:
The first thing we notice in the picture is the red silky blanket. The perspective is Worm’s eye. It was painted like this because this way he looks more powerful and important. The shades are dynamic and circular. The colors are very dark. Except in the middle where we have the strong red. We have the strong red in the middle because the painter wants us to notice Prince Albert. The red and gold colors are very symbolic. The red symbolizes the royal power of the British Empire. The gold symbolizes wealth and that England is a very powerful country with a lot of occupied land. Even though the picture is very circular, Prince Albert stands out because he is painted with vertical lines. The weather outside is very cloudy. This may illustrate the situation the British Empire was in. The different medals he is wearing is a symbol on his overall power. The picture is a form of propaganda. It shows a strong prince at a time where the people needed to believe in the British Empire. It is painted so it looks very realistic. Therefore are the colors very natural. The colours outside the window are very could, but inside with Prince Albert it looks like it is warm and cozy. Maybe it should symbolize that if you followed Prince Albert you would be save and in a warm place, but if you did not you would be outside in the cold.

INTERPRETATION:
The picture is painted so that people could see how powerful he was. If you follow Prince Albert, you would live in grate harmony and safety. This is greatly supported by the colours, lines and shapes, as descried above. Prince Albert was the one who wanted the picture to be painted, so he could show how he was Queen Victoria´s right hand. The modern person would not think the same about this picture, because the modern people cannot feel his power in the same way. The painting is painted so Prince Albert can impress the people.

Hayter's Queen Victoria

"Queen Victoria" by Sir George Hayter

We chose the picture ”Queen Victoria”.

In the picture we see the almighty Queen Victoria in a red room sitting in a golden lion chair. There are red and golden curtains all around her, which shows the viewer that she is in a royal place like a castle or palace.

Queen Victoria looks very majestic. She is sitting with a scepter in her hand, carries lots of jewelry and has her crown on her head, which also shows the viewer her royal status. She is wearing a long golden cape and a beautiful silky white dress with a golden rope as a belt around her waste.

The painting was painted in 1838 by Sir George Hayter. This tells the historical time that the painting was painted during the Victorian Age. Due to the picture displaying an enclosed environment with no windows. There is no way that we can find any indication of time.

The first thing you notice in the picture is Victoria’s face. She is looking to her right side and a little up, as if she was looking at the top of the scepter she is holding.

The picture is painted from the worm’s eye to show her status. She is higher than everyone who is looking at her. To underline the highness of her, she is sitting on a tall chair that is standing on top of a platform. She has a pillow under her feet, because the chair she is sitting on is so tall. On the chair there is a lion’s head on her right side. The lion is half covered by the cape she is wearing. The lion symbolizes the mightiest animal of them all, and her cape covers the animal to show that Victoria has more power than the mightiest animal of them all. The only one who is above her is God.

There are no specific shades or shapes in the picture, because the picture is made from reality. The dominating colors in the picture are red and gold. The colors are darker behind her, as if there was a spot on her to make her stand out. The pillow her feet are placed on, are covered with diagonal lines.

The viewer stays with Victoria in the picture.

Brooks' Private View...

Private view of the old masters exhibition, Royal Academy, 1888

By Henry Jamyn Brooks.

There are a lot of people in the picture. It is people such as artists, critics and politicians. They are standing in a big room in the royal academy. The people standing in the picture looks old and it looks like they belong to the upper class. There are many men and only a few women. In the bag ground are there pictures. The painting is painted in 1888, which is the late Victorian age. It is an exhibition where they are looking at portraits.

The thing that we noticed first is the people standing in the middle. It seems like they are more important than the others. There names are Harriet Sarah, Sir Fredric Leighton, Margaret Elizabeth, Sir Richard Wallace and Robert James Lindsay.

The painted is in a normal view. It makes us feel like we are participating in the exhibition. The painting is painted with a lot of dark colours that are earth-like. There are one thing that stands out. It is the red scarf the woman in the middle is wearing. The red is the only bright colour and seems like she is more important than the others. The red symbolize royalty and power and it helps the painting to indicate the importance of these people through the bag ground. The colours are very natural, realistic and muted.

The picture is very dynamic because of all of the movement and action. The atmosphere is very serious and formal. There are a lot of tensions in the air. It does not seem like the people are posing for the painter. It is a very realistic painting and it looks like a picture.

We think that the painting was painted to capture the yearly exhibition. They would like to remember that day. There are many important people and they had the opportunity make the painting.

The viewers today would notice that there are many more men than women. It was a normal thing back then because of the suppression of the women. It was the men that ruled and the women were not important.

There are a lot of books and it symbolizes knowledge. There are some of the cleverest men in England and it is shows by the books. The ceiling is also very important in the picture. It is very high and it makes the room bigger. The room becomes more powerful and it takes some of the focus to the paintings in the back.

Royal Family at Buckingham Palace

The Royal family at the Buckingham palace

In the picture there are to men standing and 2 women sitting in a Couch in front
In the picture we se King george V 5'th (dunke of Windsor) 1865-1936, Prince of Wales, Queen Mary 1897-1964 and Prinsesse Mary the little Girl

The Queen and the princes are sitting in the Couch. The King George.  is stranding on of the side of the Couch and the Prince is behind the Couch.  It takes place in the White painting room and it is painted in 1913.

They are all formally dressed. The King in all his medals and with s sword. The Prince is in a more modest outfit.
The Queen is wearing a Crown and fine clothes aswell. And the princess is modest

Things noticed first:
The persons. Their looks and how they stare out on the viewer.
It is painted in a sitting position witch makes the viewer look a little up to them.

The shades are soft and there are not many of them.
The Colours is a little pale and very neutral. Except the blue bands and the shiny medals
It is painted with a lot of vertical Lines.

It is quite normal on the surface, but underneath there is a lot more than the eye catches at first sight.

Mood; Pale straight faces. A little moody. They definitely do not look happy.
The Prince has a serious face and he looks a little sad.

Symbols imagery:
Crown
Medals
Sword
The blue band the King and queen are wearing. Royal order. The garter of the rose.

The life of the Royal family at that time.

The Colours makes it look very neutral and a bit pale

And then the group – George V, a full-dress Admiral of the Fleet with epaulettes, a stalwart old constitutional monarch, who hated London, but never failed in his duty; Queen Mary, who submerged her private interests out of respect for the throne, and blossomed only in widowhood; the Prince of Wales, about to do his duty in the Great War, insofar as he was allowed, but destined to surrender his heritage for an unworthy wife; and Princess Mary, soon to be the heroine of the forces, who married the much older Earl of Harwood, and who, till her dying day, trembled with nerves before every royal engagement.

The painting shows the viewer what we expect from the royal family. But on the other hand the prince makes the royal family look different and week because he faces the other way and he looks sad. It is like he doesn’t want to be there. He doesn’t have the same “fake” surface on his face.
The painting puts another perspective on the Royal family because of  they are not standing perfect facing the viewers.
